NOURISHING SMOOTHIE

Smoothies are a simple and delicious way to add nutrients to your diet. They are perfect for breakfast, after a workout, or in between meals to curb your hunger. Smoothies are gentle on the digestive system and a great source of nutrients, so they are perfect during a detox program.

This recipe is one of my favourite smoothies to make when I need a nourishing boost. The base of this smoothie is almond milk. If you haven’t yet seen my recipe for simple almond milk, you can check it out here.

In addition to 1 cup of almond milk, you will need 1 banana, 2 dates, 5 cashews and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. I also added a tablespoon of soaked chia and flax seed mix for a protein boost, but it’s optional.

The combination of these ingredients delivers a nourishing boost of energy. Below you will find the nutritional benefits for each ingredient or skip directly to the recipe.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Almond milk is high in protein, low in calories and lactose-free. Plus, making it yourself will ensure there are no nasty additives. If you choose to buy it, then always check the ingredient label to see what it contains.

Dates are a natural sweeter that doesn’t spike blood sugar levels, high in fibre, rich in iron and contain the beautiful B vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B5.

Cashews are rich in fibre and protein, and they are a great healthy fat that keeps you feeling full longer and helps your body absorb nutrients.

Cinnamon has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Cinnamon boosts your metabolism, improves digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Banana is low in fat and high in iron, fibre and potassium. For the best flavour, choose bananas that are golden yellow with a few brown spots.

Chia Seeds are considered a superfood. They are very high in fibre, contain omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. The protein in chia seeds is a complete protein that contains all nine essential amino acids. This makes chia seeds essential for a vegan diet.

Flax Seeds are very high in fibre, so it’s great for digestive health and relief. They are high in omega-3 fatty acids, as well as phytochemicals called lignans. Lignans in flax seeds are currently being studied for their ability to fight breast cancer. Some doctors note that ground flax seeds are better for digestion.

HOW TO MAKE A NOURISHING SMOOTHIE

This smoothie is very easy to make. All you need is 1 cup of almond milk, 1 banana, 2 dates with pits removed (if they are hard, soak them in warm water for 15 minutes), 5 cashews and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. You can also add 1 tablespoon of soaked chia and flax seeds mixed for a protein boost.

During the warmer months, you can make this recipe using a frozen banana for a healthy treat. If you want your smoothie extra creamy, add in extra cashews.

Blend all your ingredients, and voila, you just made a delicious healthy smoothie!
